Selma Lagerlöf (1858 –1940) was an internationally renowned Swedish writer. She published her first novel, Gösta Berling's Saga, at the age of 33. She was the first woman to win the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1909. In 1914, she was the first woman to be granted a membership of the Swedish Academy.
This copy is good+ in blue cloth with gilt and dark blue titles and designs on the spine and front cover. Fading and bumping at the spine ends and corners. The binding is quite sound. There is a small spot on the lower rear cover near the spine. The page edges are age darkened. No other marks or damage. The unclipped dust jacket is poor, having been split and reattached with archival tape. The lower 2” of the jacket spine is missing and there are smaller chips at the top jacket edge and corners. Other tears along the top jacket edge have been repaired with archival tape. Jacket spine is sun darkened.
The author has inscribed on the half title page ‘Herbert M. Meyer, with kind greetings from Sweden and Selma Lagerlof”.
Herbert Marx Meyer (1903-1988) was an enthusiastic Detroit book collector who assembled a large collection of early 20th century literature. He corresponded with many of the authors of the time, and thus many of his books bear friendly and warm inscriptions.
Uncommon in the dust jacket in any condition, and very scarce signed.
